The Australian Melaan Dairy Goat made its first appearance in the show rings of Australia in 2003.
Breeders of the Australian Melaan have been on a 5-generation breeding program to enable recognition of this Dairy Goat as a separate recognized dairy breed.
This new breed has drawn a lot of spectator interest, with its intense black and amiable nature. The breed has evolved to a large degree from British Alpine Dairy Goats 'throwing' solid black kids. However with selective breeding the Australian Melaan has emerged as a recognized breed in its own right, with its own characteristics.
