Boer Goat Growth Rates E-mail

What are the expected grwoth rates of Boer Goats?

As with any animal, the weight gain of the young Boer kid will vary depending on the environment in which it is raised and other factors.  This may include the time of the year that the kid is born, the farm and herd management system in place and to some extent the age and condition of the dam at the time of kidding.

The figures below are only a guide but also apply for Boer Goats exported to overseas countries.

However, it is important to note that a Full Blood Buck must be used as the sire over the Full Blood registered or unregistered Boer Doe to achieve the exceptional growth potential of the animal.

The following is a guide only but can be used for Full Blood Boers in rangeland conditions.

Animals raised on more productive pasture, or with more favourable conditions, or with intensive management can be expected to achieve weight gain in excess of 250 grams per day.

When goats are exported overseas, it is normal for them to lose a small percentage of their weight on arrival. This is generally an adjustment response to the flight, to a new herd, to a new environment.  While handling the animals quietly and as little as possible for the first few weeks, will certainly smooth the transition until the goats are familiar with their new surroundings, it is imperative to be well prepared in the feed requirements for the stock well before arrival at the farm. MLA (meat & Livestock Australia) nutritional advice for Malaysian breeders is available on this website

Boer goats will generally re-cover very quickly to their new environment and resume the weight gain.
