Export Procedures E-mail
The following procedures are followed by AQIS officials before the export of any livestock from Australia.

Please note: The Quarantine period can be between 4 – 5 weeks or sometimes longer depending on availability of flights and of course the importing county’s protocol requirements. They can also be affected by the number of exports awaiting shipment and the combination of several orders that are traveling on the same flight.
At the HLES Quarantine Facility

  • AQIS officials visit the farm to ensure compliance with the importing country’s protocols.
  • Several Stock Health Checks are undertaken and signed at the quarantine facility to satisfy compliance with Australian Export Requirements. No livestock can leave Australia unless these are granted.
  • Blood testing, drenches, vaccinations and all specific tests are carried out on all livestock in quarantine and at specific times.
  • All tests must be undertaken by a veterinarian who has approved AQIS accreditation. Blood testing is carried out at an approved Laboratory only. All stock are given a generic 1, 2, 3 for the purposes of laboratory blood checking
  • All stud livestock are checked for correct Tattoo number, ID and tag number.  Random checks on livestock are undertaken.
  • All non-stud stock must also have an approved ID number.
  • All livestock must be sprayed with an AQIS approved tick and lice spray within 96 hours of departure from the Quarantine farm to the airport.
  • All livestock should be free of dirt, grass seeds and food traces before being loaded.
  • An AQIS representative (usually the person with whom you have been dealing) is present when any animal is being loaded at an airport for export. A final check is carried out and any animal showing any sign of ill health is pulled out.
  • A representative from the RSPCA is also present when animals are being loaded. (They do have the right to refuse exit to any animal)

At the Airport

  • Stock travel with a Vet on board, in air conditioned planes and are carried in safe and sturdy pallets. The number of animals in a pallet is determined by weight and is established prior to the livestock leaving the farm.
  • The weight of all animals is forwarded to the exporter (Export agent with a livestock export license) before stock leave the farm.
  • The exporter “buys” space in the plane for the livestock.
  • Strict laws prevent any overcrowding in pallets as well as the head height clearance in the pallets for every animal. NO animal leaves unless ALL height and weight clearances are met.
  • All Stud stock MUST have correct ID and/or tattoo and each and every stud animal must be accompanied by its Registered Papers. These must be sighted by AQIS at the point of departure.

AQIS and HLES are very thorough and specific with requirements to ensure that all livestock arrive at their destination suffering minimum stress and/or bruising. Everything measure possible is taken to ensure that livestock arrive in prime and healthy condition.
